An Example of Existing Partner Participation
(First year in the program for this particular Partner)
Partner: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
Business: Computer Chip Manufacturer
Employees: ~3,000 (in 2001)
After becoming Partners in 2001, AMD decided to help reduce ozone emissions with three main strategies to get credit toward their reduction goal:
- Commute Solutions Programs (carpooling, vanpooling, transit, bicycling, etc.)
- Clean Energy Use
- Ozone Education for Employees
The Clean Air Partners Program measures reduction credits as equivalent daily commuters, or EDCs. With 3,000 employees, AMD's goal was to reduce their EDCs by 10%, or 300 EDCs.
AMD offered incentives for employees to participate in Commute Solutions Programs and tracked their participation. The company purchased GreenChoice (sustainable) energy from the City of Austin for clean energy credits. And for education, it posted ozone information on its web site/bulletin boards and installed "Ozone Action Day" signs at exits to display on high ozone days.
In August of that year, AMD’s Clean Air Partner contact representative went online to the program's Web site to report AMD's achievements. Some of the reporting data required has changed since 2001, so if they reported these programs via today’s reporting website, the required data would be:
- The average number employees per day using commute solutions (sorted by mode)
- The amount of GreenChoice power purchased (in annual kilowatt-hours provided by the City)
- A "Yes" response for providing Ozone Education Programs
The online reporting tool calculated their credits and presented them in a report to AMD showing that they were well on its way to the 10 percent reduction goal.
