Commute Solutions Month 2007

During September, the Commute Solutions Coalition held several events to provide residents of Williamson, Travis and Hays counties with information on the benefits of alternatives to drive-alone commuting.

A Commuter Challenge was held from September 9th to September 22nd.  The Challenge was kicked off with a rally at Republic Square.  The Commuter Challenge drew a total of 774 participants.   The participants logged 4,702 alternative commute trips and 114,000 drive-alone miles were avoided.  By logging in their daily commutes during the two-week Challenge, contestants had a chance to win great prizes, with 1st prize being a $500 gift certificate to the Tanger Outlet Mall.  Additionally, employers had the opportunity to rally their employees to win a trophy in these categories:  Highest employee participation for Government Employer, Business Employer, and Employer with the highest percentage of participants.

Commute Solutions Month ended with an Awards Ceremony and Weirdest Commute Contest held at Austin’s Wooldridge Park.   KVUE News Anchor, Olga Campos, presented the employer awards to the University of Texas, Spansion, and the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG).  Austin Councilmember Lee Leffingwell presented awards to the winners of the City of Austin’s Walk, Bike and Roll Contest.   Festivities included live music, food, free bicycle tune-ups, and availability of electric cars and scooters to view.

Clean Air Partners and the Commute Solutions Coalition congratulate all of the participants and winners, and encourage everyone to continue their alternative commuting efforts year-round and enter the Challenge again next year!
